Robot, AMR & AGV housings

Evaluate covers, bases and service enclosures for mobile robots. Large curved hollow forms may suit rotomolding. Mounting accuracy, cooling and sensor clearances need review. Precision frames, drives and safety systems require their own manufacturing routes.

ENGINEERING BRIEF

What to send for a useful review

  • Overall dimensions and installation space
  • Critical interfaces, datums and tolerance
  • Sensor visibility, heat, grounding and shielding
  • Texture, colour reference and visible surfaces
  • Test conditions and pass/fail limits

Catalogue examples show applications, not guaranteed specifications. Grade, dimensions, testing and delivery are agreed for each project.

Rotomolding vs injection and blow molding

Choose the process around geometry, demand, finish and assembly. Rotomolding is worth investigating for relatively large hollow parts and varied production runs. Injection molding may better suit precise features at sustained high volumes; blow molding may suit efficient hollow containers. There is no universal annual-volume crossover or fixed tooling-cost ratio. Compare quotations for the same duty, accepted quality and delivered assembly. A low mold price can be offset by labor, cycle time or freight.

Tolerances, shrinkage and assembly datums

Specify the few dimensions that actually control assembly and explain their function. A single tolerance percentage for every rotomolded part is not a useful acceptance standard. Separate molded envelope dimensions from machined interfaces and hole positions. Agree when the part is measured, its support condition and the reference datums. Test the sample on the real mating equipment. A tool made accurately does not remove the influence of resin, pigment and cooling on the final part.

Ribs, flat panels and stiffness

Large flat panels need a deliberate stiffness and appearance strategy. Investigate contours, hollow ribs and support locations before making the entire part thicker. Injection-style narrow solid ribs cannot simply be transferred into a rotomolded design. For a robot cover, separate the cosmetic surface from the precision mounting structure where appropriate. Check deformation with the part installed, after cooling and under the stated service load. An attractive rendering does not show creep or long-term panel movement.
